Transition Case Study
The video below discusses first hand the experience from an AeroPM employee who has only very recently and successfully transitioned from the Defence.
Making the decision to transition
Everyones journey from Defence is driven by an individual and unique inflection point in their lives. Whether that inflection point is related to age, skill set, family, posting, promotion, location or deployment, your transition does not have to be surrounded by trepidation or confusion. At AeroPM, as ex-serving members of Defence we recognise the need for support mechanism, strong networks and mentoring throughout the transition process and the continued need for this support post-transition and into the far reaching future. At AeroPM, we will treat you like an individual rather than just a number throughout your transition process.
Applicability of your skills in the private sector
It is quite common for most Defence members transitioning from Defence not to have updated their CV since joining the military and we all know how hard it is to explain the extensive skill sets obtained as part of our careers in relation to operations, planning, time management, discipline, respect, leadership, delivery, communication and administration skills. As ex-serving members of Defence, we recognise and appreciate the skills that you have acquired during your service careers and consequently we ask that if you are looking for work with us, then please present us with your Defence CV without civilian translation. Upon joining us at AeroPM, we will then help you shape your personal brand and value proposition in a manner that the clients will appreciate and that best reflects your capabilities.
Milestones and Expectations
There are a number of significant milestones that surround a members transition from Defence from making the initial decision to transition, submitting of your transition paperwork, working through the DCO transition guides, approaching and working through your last day in uniform, and then taking part in your very first day out of uniform. At AeroPM, our team are vividly aware of the feelings, requirements and needs of those that are transitioning and we assign mentors to each individual that we employ to assist in the transition process across all of these milestones. Most importantly, we work through what each individuals expectations are throughout the process and tailor our transition program to the needs of each individual.
What does a successful transition look like?
Success will look different to each individual transitioning from Defence. Our aim at AeroPM is to enable the smooth transition of Defence members from their current employment situation and into the private sector by harnessing the members energy and giving them purpose through a structured program and focus on long-term success for a secure and enjoyable future for the member and their families. As an important part of this service, AeroPM has developed a consulting masterclass program to formally up-skill veterans as professional consultants.
AeroPM Professional Consulting Masterclass Program
AeroPM run a number of initiatives to support the veteran in the workplace. One of these is our Consulting Masterclass Program. Baselining the provision of services to our clients is something that we believe here at AeroPM is the most important function for a professional consulting service within the Defence sector. Our consultants have a wide breadth and extensive depth of experience gained from their times as members in Defence; and baselining their consulting skills through a dedicated series of masterclasses is a service that we provide to our workforce not only on induction into AeroPM, but on an ongoing basis throughout their tenure here with us. The masterclasses draw from the skills and experiences of our members through a program of progressive and escalating difficulty, leveraging practical case studies and tying them into academic-based models tailored for real-world application. The end-state is to transition Defence members into industry leading professional consultants. We believe that the results speak for themselves!
The AeroPM Professional Guidance Program
Another successful initiative that AeroPM has implemented to support the veteran in the workplace is the Professional Guidance Program (PGP). We recognise that Defence has a strong professionalisation program, and we have tailored our own unique professionalisation program to cater for Defence Veterans. The AeroPM PGP is a professional development framework established for the AeroPM consulting workforce across a breadth of skill sets and skill levels necessary to deliver the professional service to Defence. The PGP lifecycle is reset every 6-months and has five disciplines including Project Management, Engineering, Commercial, Test and Evaluation and Logistics. Each disciple has a lead who is responsible for oversite of the discipline as well as mentoring and coaching each team within.
